About the Artist

Hein Gravenhorst, born 1937, studied photography from 1953-1955, graphics and industrial design from 1955-1957, and film technology from 1958-1960 in Berlin and Munich. Before founding a studio for photography near Stuttgart in 1963 he managed the production of cartoon films.

In 1963 he also started to collaborate with Manfred Kage at the Institute for Scientific Photography and Cinematography (crystal optics and polychromatic variations). Gravenhorst developed reflex images in 1964.

In 1965 he created his first visual depictions of mathematical terms `Rotatorische Transpositionen` and `Fotomechanische Transformationen`. Gravenhorst took part in exhibitions in computer art and was founding member artist in the `Generative Photographie` show in Bielefeld, Germany, in 1968. His constructivist style, serial methods and strictly deterministic compositions mad him one of the defining representatives of generative photography.

Since 2001, purely digital works have been created on the computer as a continuation of generative photography. The images bear no titles or series designations, and the artist deliberately refrains from describing the images.

He himself sees them as " energy fields" that enter into spiritual communication with the viewer. ..... i would like my pictures to be allowed to speak for themselves and their effect can be realized in the viewer by "looking at them properly".
